Turnitin service status

Turnitin have told us that they “are committed to delivering reliable and consistent service to our customers across the globe who are now faced with new and unprecedented challenges.” (https://www.turnitin.com/blog/how-turnitin-is-helping-you-minimize-disruption-from-covid-19 ).
Unfortunately, however, there has been some recent service disruption. The Digital Education Office monitors Turnitin service status and will notify our users, via the Digital Education Office blog, of any planned maintenance, or when significant disruption is occurring. You can also view Turnitin’s own service status and opt to subscribe to their status updates at: https://turnitin.statuspage.io/.

Turnitin maintenance update and service disruption

Service disruption.

Please be aware that Turnitin reported an unexpected service disruption in which users may have been unable to submit.  A fix has been implemented, but reports due to be generated may take longer then usual.

This issue occurred at 04:56 BST on the 27th April. A fix was implemented at 08:58 BST on the 27th April.

*Update* Turnitin’s scheduled maintenance date change.

Turnitin’s scheduled maintenance will now take place on Saturday 2nd May from 16:00 – 20:00. Marking may be disrupted during this time and students using Turnitin may have to retry their submissions.

Xerte upgrade and downtime 27th April

Xerte Upgrade Monday 27th April

Following recent advice from the Xerte Development Team, IT Services will be upgrading Xerte to version 3.8.5 between 8am and 4pm on Monday 27th April.

This upgrade contains important and essential security updates. We apologise for the late notice and timing; however, the upgrade is essential to ensure Xerte remains a safe and secure tool for staff and students.

In addition to the security improvements, this upgrade will bring us up to the most recent version and brings the following benefits:

  • New page types including ‘Text Correction’.
  • Sub-templates and Learning Designs.
  • Improved tracking of Project Plays.
  • Improved and accessible Hotspots.
  • Better integration with Mediasite (Re/Play) video content in Media Lessons.
  • Improved Display Modes.
  • Improved accessibility.
  • Improved Audio Player

Turnitin service disruption: 19th April and 20th April

Please be aware that Turnitin encountered two service disruptions on the 19th and 20th of April. The details and times these issues occurred can be found below.

19th April: BST 01:30 – 05:50

Users may have experienced issues with uploading and viewing submissions.

20th April: BST 17:00 – 18:45

Users may have experienced slow log in and uploading times.

Support for staff teaching and assessing online

The Digital Education Office is continuing its programme of training webinars and virtual drop-ins.  Webinar topics include: using Blackboard Collaborate, engaging online discussions, creating and re-using video, Blackboard basics, and online assessment and feedback. Turnitin planned maintenance. Wednesday 22nd April: 08:00 – 13:00

There will be a possible service disruption on Turnitin on Wednesday 22nd April from 08:00 to 13:00. This is due to Turnitin requiring time for emergency maintenance. Marking may be disrupted during this time and students using Turnitin may have to retry their submissions.

DEO dropins and training webinars for staff

To support you to move teaching and assessment online, the DEO are running daily drop-ins as well as subject-specific webinars for staff.  Current webinars cover using Collaborate for live sessions, creating and reusing video, Blackboard basics, assessment and feedback, and designing and facilitating engaging online discussion.
