Editing problems with Re/Play service

The Re/Play service is experiencing problems when members of staff are attempting to edit recordings.

After completing the edits on the timeline and clicking ‘Commit’, only ‘Commit to New’ is visible rather than the expected three options. The Digital Education Office has raised this with the software supplier. The problem has been identified and a fix is being prepared. We are now awaiting final results of the testing and a date for installing it on to our system.

We would advise staff not to attempt editing of recordings until this is in place. If your recording contains anything sensitive that should not have been recorded, please contact digital-education@bristol.ac.uk.

Windows update to Lecture theatres / Teaching and Study Space PCs

We have had the following communication from IT services that is of note to all those intending to use the PCs in lecture theatres this coming week, particularly if you are going to be using files from your shared drive for the lecture.  If you have any questions about this upgrade please contact IT services.

We would like you to be aware that the majority of the Lecture Theatres and Teaching and Study Space PCs have now been updated to Windows 10.

In order to simplify the structure of our network storage, which provides various benefits to the organisation, we no longer connect people to specific filestore folders (network/mapped drives).

We STRONGLY advise anyone who uses a machine of this type to check prior to use that they can access any files they need.

Various methods can be used to access files :

•             OneDrive is easily available on all Windows 10 machines

•             Network folders are available in File Explorer under : This PC / UoB network folders (you will have to navigate from here to your own area)

A USB stick can be used as a fall back, however the methods above are preferred as they are more secure.

More information about finding your files can be found at:

https://www.bristol.ac.uk//it-services/about/projects/windows10/using.html

Re/Play updates – New static cameras

As part of the continuing Re/Play extension project we are pleased to announce we have extended the coverage of cameras in rooms where a chalk or white board are used as an integral part of the Lecture.

There are now 23 rooms across the institution a full list can be located here

What is recorded?

At the current time these cameras have been installed with a static capture area and this is indicated by the Re/Play Record Area stickers in the room (see above). In larger rooms this will not be every board.

How do I request to use the camera?

As per the Recording Educational Uses policy we do not film lectures without express permission. These cameras will not be switched on unless you request for filming to take place. If you wish to opt in please email a request to the service-desk@bristol.ac.uk and ask for the camera template to be used on your unit code. Please note that if this is for a jointly taught unit then it will stay in place for the duration of the teaching.

Re/Play upgrade complete

We are pleased to confirm that Re/Play is now back online, the Digital Education Office and IT Services are still undertaking testing and the service will remain at risk.

There is still some indexing of content in the background which will effect recordings created after the 10th July being linked to a catalog. This will be completed by tomorrow morning and an update will be provided on this blog.

By upgrading to this version, we will benefit from new and improved features, including:

  • A better user interface and search function for staff in My Re/Play
  • An improved video management interface for staff
  • Dual video playback on mobile devices; this is for presentations that use two video sources created with the desktop recorder or with the video template in equipped lecture theatres
  • The ability to add quizzes into videos (both existing and new recordings)
  • Updated playback through better streaming

We will also be looking to evaluate the following –

  • Software solution for room capture
  • Inline annotation of videos for students
  • Inbuilt closed-captioning

We are continuing to extend the Re/Play service though our Re/Play extension project.

Re/Play upgrade Thursday 12 October – delay in publishing of some lectures

Re/Play was upgraded yesterday morning (12 October).  While the upgrade has improved playback performance, it unfortunately resulted in a delay in the automatic publishing of  lectures recorded from 5 pm on Monday until 6 pm Tuesday.

We have rectified this and made the materials visible.  Many apologies for the inconvenience caused.

To make a recording private:

  1. Go to the My Re/Play tab in Blackboard
  2. Find the recording
  3. Change the setting from ‘Viewable’ to ‘Private’.
